There is no "usual" period. You need to find a TSV setting that fits your trading and analyzing style.

Don Worden has used TSV18 Simple almost exclusively for years in his notes attached to charts.

Peter Worden uses a wide variety of TSV periods in his attached notes, anywhere from 18 to 67, sometimes Simple but mostly Exponential. Lately, he seems to have a preference for TSV38 Exponential.
