Bruce-

I was wondering if you could post the formula for creating an indicator that shows when the both bollinger bands come inside the Keltner Channels (aka Squeeze On).  This is an indicator known as the TTM Squeeze.  I have created the one you posted a while back but it seems to be inconsistent (sometimes it shows a squeeze is ON even though both bands are not within the channel).  For a squeeze to be valid both bands must be in the channel at the same time.  Hope this can be done! thanks in advance.

Just an FYI that checking for both Bollinger Bands to be inside both Keltner Channels is not in fact the way the TTM Squeeze indicator being on is calculated. The Squeeze indicator being on is in fact true when the Bollinger Bands 20, 2.00 are narrower than the simple Keltner Channels 20, 1.50. These settings have been checked and compared on multiple occassions against the actual indicator (I guess it is still possible they have changed since the most recent time the formulas were verified - I don't have have way to check it myself).

That said, it is possible to create the desired Condition Formula as long as you are aware that it is not the TTM Squeeze. It turns out to be much longer than the actual Condition Formula for the TTM Squeeze being on. The following checks for the simple Bollinger Bands 20, 2.00 to be completely inside the exponential Keltner Channels 20, 1.50.

several weeks ago I asked for the above formula...i built it but when I tried to get the "dots" all in line squeeze on squeeze off the squeeze on dots were above and not inline could there be a mistake in the formula that is causing this?

The Condition Formula just returns true or false, it does not in and of itself return a row of dots unless it is used in a Custom PCF Indicator or Custom PCF % True Indicator.

Assuming you are trying to use it as the centerline in a TTM Squeeze indicator, you could use the following as the Formula in a Custom PCF Indicator.

Bruce-

I am gonna give this another shot.  I would like to show when the both Bollinger Bands come inside the Keltner Channel (this is known as the Squeeze according to John Carters book "mastering the trade" I am also a member of his website SImpler Options and this is what we identify the squeeze as).  You had posted this formula for me several weeks ago.  However, when I build the idicator and scale it with the "Squeeze Off" (when bollinger bands exit the Keltner Channel) shown as dots and follow the instructions regarding to scaling the Squeeze On not all of the squeeze on "dots" line up with each other.  Some of the squeeze on "dots" appear above the center line.  Maybe I am making a mistake or could there be an error in the formula that causes this to happen.  I would like to email a screen shot of what it looks like since it is hard to explain in the forum.  If you understand what I am asking for maybe you can make the necesary changes so I can fix it.  I really appreciate your help and I am sure you are getting tired addressing this.  thank you again for your patience

I have sent you a TCMail with a chart attached with a TTM Squeeze indicator plotted in it which you can save. This TTM Squeeze indicator has been modified to use the formula checking for both Bollinger Bands to be inside the Keltner Channels instead of just checking for the width of the Bollinger Bands to be narrower than the Keltner Channels.

You can go to Tools | Old Features | TCMail from the menus of TC2000 v12 in order to access your TCMail.

researching recently on this topic it seems that TTM sqz is actually where both bollinger bands are inside the keltner channel , could you please send me TC mail chart containing sqz indicator with both bollinger bands inside keltner channels ..as you sent to few others above 

and here is the link for John Carter most recent video of the tools that he uses ,, would you pls pass on to the developers the link to create these for TC users that will be a great help he explains much in detail in this 2 hour video ,  john's indicators are offered in Trade station and Think or swim then i m sure TC2000 can also make a deal with them for offering their subscribers or TC developer team can create them after watching this video :)

what i m looking for is a early in and out signal inside that squeeze with red dots ,so in the above link if u go to time 1:41:38 there are two green bars explained which are interpreted as squeeze is about to fire long if the price is near the upper bollinger band and same i need pcf for squeeze is about to fire short if the price is near the lower bollinger band 

If you can please help in creating this my skills are limited compare to your vast knowledge sometimes i m good in chewing food rather then cooking it  :)

Seriously, no, it is not. This has been verified experimentally by customers numerous times and I've seen the screen shots. The dots match up when checking for the Bollinger Bands to be narrower than the Keltner Channels. The dots do not match up when checking for the Bollinger Bands to both be inside the Keltner Channels. The reason the two things are different is that the centerlines do not match.

The description by the narrator is that the early signal is for when the squeeze is on and the Bollinger Bands are getting wider and doesn't seem to have anything to do with price being near the Bollinger Bands.

Was just rereading this thread and found the bits about two different interpretations of Carter's squeeze.

Bruce, if possible can you send me both?

  • The normal TTM Squeeze indicator 
  • And the version of TTM Squeeze which checks for both Bollinger Bands to be inside the Keltner Channels

I wanted to plot dots for both and eyeball the differences myself. I'm more interested in Carter's original version since he's the author, but the diffferences might be interesting to observe.

I admit I always thought the BB had to be inside the KC ... the issue of the centerlines not matching never occured to me...

Hi Bruce,

I was looking through the volatility forums and have replicated the 6/100 Historical Volatility indicator and the TTM Squeeze dots using the Squeeze On [and Squeeze Off] formulas you posted elsewhere (in conjunction with an SMA(5) of a ROC(12) custom indicator).

I wanted to use these as condition columns in an Easyscan, but when I do this, I get a message saying this is not a Boolean result, etc. [I am posting the two formulas I am now using, as indicators, for the 6/100HV and the TTM Squeez ON, below].

Have an associated third issue though. Would like to use the Bollinger Bandwidth "Squeeze" as a condition in an Easysan as well, but am not sure how to implement this. Your help would be much appreciated.

Earlier you wrote PCFs that are true when the following conditions are met:

  1. Squeeze On
  2. Squeeze Off
  3. Momentum Above Zero
  4. Momentum Below Zero
  5. Momentum Moving Up
  6. Momentum Moving Down
  7. Squeeze Off to On
  8. Squeeze On to Off
I'm assuming PCFs 3, 4, 5, and 6 will work equally well for both Squeeze indicators. Do you have PCFs for the "Driscoll" version for: 
  • Squeeze On
  • Squeeze Off
  • Squeeze Off to On
  • Squeeze On to Off

Squeeze Off to On and Squeeze On to Off are too long and slow to be practical or post in the forums.

I know the Driscoll version is based on being inside the channels, but do those channels share the same centerline as the bands? Or are these Keltner Channels using their default EMA centerline and these Bollinger Bands using their default SMA centerline?

The Keltner Channels are using their default EMA centerline and the Bollinger Bands are using their default SMA centerline.

If this were not the case, there would be a difference in the indicators at all.

If the "Driscoll Squeeze" is based on bands & channels that don't share a common center being inside one another, I don't really get what the point is. It sounds too restricitve - probably occurs as often as a visit from Halley's comet. Can't see where the value in that is, but maybe that's just me.

Okay, so the one indicator we don't have is a squeeze where a default set of Bollinger Bands are both inside of a quasi-Keltner Channel (default 20, 1.5 parameters, but a SMA centerline). Has anyone ever asked for one? Is that a big deal, or would it wind up being too slow & impractical? Just curious.

I'm still thinking the original version based on width is the best option.

That is exactly the same as the width version. If the centerlines match, then only the width of the channels matter.

Bruce, I have the TC2000v12.5 On my Mac, but have just bought an iPad to be portable. Can you tell me how to get it onto my iPad please. It tells me I need Microsoft silverlight on it but then also told my iPad won't accept it. Is there a way around this? I see on the website that it can be used on iPads so a bit lost here.

That is not an error message. It just means the formula will be saved as a condition (returning true or false) instead of as an indicator (returning a numeric value).
