I have been using the vix and vxn for some time and I agree they work well in forecasting a change in trend. I think they are very good direction indicators combined with the RSI, STO’s, and MACD. New to TC2000 so not sure how the TSV,MS, or BOP work on these yet

IMHO, the VIX > 30 is indicative of uncertainty.

a VIX < 20 (and we are at ~14) is indicative of investors feeling the market is constructive.

therefore, I dont see anything special in this recent jump of the VIX

I dont see how it aids me in trading. I do like to hear how you use it for trading.

thanks in advance.

i do a good amount of market timing for index trading.. with covered call writing.

understand the vix is a volitity index for the CBOE... i use it as a leading indicator to the future mkt.

when the vix recently hit its 9 year low i knew its time to take profits on some of my long term positions. so far the timing part was perfect but its at its genesis ...lets see if the vix was a good leading indicator that we will have a small sell off.. give it a month and i think the vix will be near the upper teens and the dow will be about 200-300 points lower..

Yes.

VIX--X (note two dashes)

You can always search for tickers in TeleChart. When you hit "J" to jump to a ticker, click COMPANY NAME search. Type in "volatility" and it will appear.

If you look at long-term charts, the last time volatility was this low was in 1995. If you got out then you missed one of the great bull markets in history.

Let the seller beware!

Its now a little over a month after my original post.. lets see what the vix was telling us.. remember i said the market was showing overbought signs with the vix indicator.. and it was time for a sell off... boy was the vix right

on 12/23/2004 the vix was a low of 11.14 and the DOW was at 10864

one month later

on 1/24/2005 the vix moved up to 14.17... a 27.19% increase and the dow moved down 4.56% to 10368

THE VIX FORCASTED THIS MOVE DOWN.... ITS A GREAT INDICATOR..

i made over 45 % on my djx put options in less than 3 weeks... long live the VIX

i use the vix not as a tool to tell me to sell my positions. i use it as a way of hedgeing my positions and make more money with options. i didnt sell one share of my portofolio.

Using vix(invisable) with 5 day avg and 10 avg on a 2 day chart, compared to QQQQ or the DOW-30(only two I've tried). Gives some interesting bottoming indications. But to me, rather vague on tops.
