In he August 6, 2004 Worden Report, Sir TANSTAAFL presented a Volume-weighted MACD indicator, which works great in TC2005. I am wanting to create pcfs that show 1) when the VMACD 12-26-9 is crossing 0 and 2) when VMACD is crossing its signal line. How would I go about that? Would adding volume to each step of this calculation give me the correct formula for crossing a signal line, for example? If that would work that would allow me also to test with other periods than 12,26 and 9. Any thoughts much appreciated.

Here is the indicator from the report:

It really isn't a "MACD" as much as a volume-wieghted PROC of some sort.
For crossing the 0 line try this:

For crossing the signal line you are best off using the visual difference sorting method mentioned by him in the report.

Thank you for your pcf. I compared the entry and exit signals it gives (using a Percent True custom indicator) to the VMACD setup with 9-day ema in the Worden Report. It gives very different signals. Dumb question, but you said the pcf in the report was more of a "PROC." Do you mean price rate-of-change? It isn't really a true VMACD then? And the one you have presented is? I don't want to start an idealogical argument going :) I just need to understand better. Is there a way to write a pcf for a VMACD crossing its 9 ema signal line? Also, is there a way to create a VMACD line and its signal line in TC2005 so I can view it line I would a regular MACD? I know I am loaded with questions here, but John Bollinger talks alot about VMACD but I can find little in the literature on how to create one, both with pcf signals and as an indicator to view on a chart... Thanks for any help.

Craig's PCF is triggered when Tanstaafls first equation goes positive.
As Tanstaafl stated it is too complex to create it with the 9 exp signal.
That is why he used the sorting method he did.
Your best bet is to use the first equation and add a 9 period mav to it and do a difference sort. This will show you stocks where the line is about to cross.

If you chart out Tanstaafl's indicator and then overlay Craig's pcf as a Percent True indicator (a way to backtest in TC2005), I think you will see that the entry signals are not the same.

I think you will find they match up (one spikes to 100 when the other is above zero.)

That is what I looked at.
You may not have the "center zero line" checked.

PROC is price rate of change. No real meaning other than it looked more like a rate of change with price and volume to me than a MACD (which is the difference between two price moving averages)?
Create and EasyScan and include this PCF:

Set the VALUE limit to MIN to less than zero.
Then do a VISUAL DIFFERENCE sort of the results by comparing the plotted indicator to the plotted 9ema of itself. You will concentrate on the stocks with a visual difference close to zero.

The monster PCF you would end up with would be a very close approximation of the 9ema of the original formula. You could then write a PCF that has it below the original formula yesterday but above it today.
It can be done, if you want to take the time. Personally, I think doing a visual difference sort of the EasyScan I mentioned above would be easier.

In either case, the Indicator Sort method outlined by Tanstaafl in the Friday, August 6, 2004 Worden Report is an effective method of detecting crossovers. I have been trying to create a Personal Criteria Formula based solution, but the results so far have not been particularly practical when attempting to create reasonably accurate approximations of a 9-Period EMA.

The PCF is the difference between the two VWMAs of price with like terms of the form Ck*Vk combined.

The requirement in the Worden Report was to find items for which the VWMACD Histogram upcrossed zero. The EasyScan eliminates the items for which the VWMACD Line is above zero regardless of whether the VWMACD Histogram upcrossed zero. I doubt that was your intention.

I have been using the following formula provided by Bruce (Wednesday, July 05, 2006 2:18:43 PM) because the indicator is timelier than the original formula provided by Tanstaafl. However, I would like to use a PCF and Scan with either a 9 day SMA or EMA, but need some guidance with the formula. To determine the crossover of the 9 day SMA or EMA, I would need to calculate the SMA or EMA for the past 10 days. I will assume the calculation for the 9 day simple ma is much simpler than the 9 day exponential ma, so I would be thrilled if you can provide the formula for the indicator value for the prior day, and I would expect that I can then calculate the indicator for the prior days.
I am not clear as to whether I should I be using the .153984303064341 and the .0741468444601841 decimal amounts or a different decimal amounts? Should I be multiplying by 11/13, and continue calculations through 41 days, and multiply by the 26 day exponential volume?
In the second part of the calculation should the calculation remain 25/27, and continue the calculation through 89 days? And what would the exponential calculation at the end be?
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

In either case, the Indicator Sort method outlined by Tanstaafl in the Friday, August 6, 2004 Worden Report is an effective method of detecting crossovers. I have been trying to create a Personal Criteria Formula based solution, but the results so far have not been particularly practical when attempting to create reasonably accurate approximations of a 9-Period EMA.
