sorting by multiple RSI's? Rate this Topic:

I want to sort stocks by RSI 7 for daily, weekly, and monthly charts. Is there a way to have all 3 RSI's be incorporated into a scan that would tell me which stocks are below 30 or above 70 for all three measures?

I don't understand why RSI here asks for a period, and an averaging period. Can't I just do RSI 7 period and not average?

Yes. This is normally done if Use Wilders Smoothing is checked. Set the Avg Period to 1 and it won't matter if the Average Type is set to Simple or Exponential.

Wow, Thanks! - I take it I paste each one of these long formulae in as a PCF, and having created the PCF's I simply build them into the two easyscans. Is that correct?

Hi Bruce,

I tried to plot Wilder's RSI indicator (RSI=7, Use smoothing, Avg=1) and your daily RSI7 as a custom indicator. The indicators do not quite fit together. Is this because of rounding issues or some other problems?

They are on different scales. The Custom Indictator scales to the highest and lowest values of the visible chart. The RSI built-in indicator is forced on a 0 to 100 scale.

The values for the current day are also different. Is this due to way Custom Indicator is scaled?

There are two issues. Craig has already talked about the scaling issue. This issue only applies to how the lines are displayed, and not to the actual values.

The other issue is that a Wilder's Smoothed RSI uses Exponential Moving Averages in the calculation of the numerator and denominator portions of the RSI calculation. The charted RSI does not use the all of the available history to calculate these EMAs. The provided formula does not use all of the available history to calculate these EMAs. They use different amounts of history. Even if they didn't, the methods used to create these EMA approximations are different. There can be a significant difference in the amount of weight given the oldest data used for each calculation (if "enough" data is used for both formulas, this stops making a difference).

You may wish to try this longer version that uses more data to see if it meets your needs better (it's also been re-arranged a bit to make the formula more efficient):
