Hi there!
If I was smart enough to invest $5000 in Cisco stock in 1990 and the %change being now 46175.00, how much money would I have made. What is the function of the %change; how does it affect my investment?

I really can't tell you for sure. If you don't count things like dividends, fees, and taxes, a $5000 investment with a 46175% total change over the investment period would be worth $2308750. I'll move this to Stock and Market Talk where other traders will be more likely to see it and comment.

I read in one of William O'Neil's books that had you put something like 4 gran in CSCO stock back in the early 90's...you would have made nearly 250 million dollars had you sold it at the very peak in the late 90's. That's a quarter of a billion. CSCO had the greatest run in market history. That is unlikely to happen to any of us...but it does show that anything is possible with Wall Street.

The real question to ask is how much an original 5000 dollars worth of CSCO would be now if you had the misfortune to buy it on 3/28/00 when it was $77.88/share. The answer is $1166.54 less commissions. The good news is, at least you wouldn't owe any capital gains tax. The bad news, that's pretty much what happened to me, except I sold it about two years ago for low twenty-something and change. Talk about calling the anti-top. I've learned a lot since then.
