These are the available earnings criteria in TeleChart, along with their definitions:

Earnings ($Millions) 1-Yr
This is the sum of the trailing 4 quarters of net income (profit) as taken from the quarterly report. This is not the earnings per share. This value will also provide some insight into company size. It reads in millions of dollars.

Earnings as a percent of Sales 1-Yr
This is an indication of profit margin. Weak profit margins are often a sign of hidden vulnerability in a stock that appears to have high earnings. Be careful of companies that pay high dividends while having low profit margins. Within industries, the companies with the highest profit margins are usually the leaders. It is a sign of good management. This reads in percentage.

Earnings Growth Rate 5-YrThe compound annual earnings per share 5-year growth rate. In looking for quality companies, well established companies of good size, this criterion is indispensable. The units are in percentages.

EPS Percent Change (Latest Q)The percentage change in earnings per share from the comparable quarter a year before. Timely stocks will usually have strong recent quarterly earnings to validate the annual earnings strength. This reads in percentage.

EPS Percent Change (2nd Q back)
The percentage change in earnings per share from the comparable quarter a year before.

EPS Percent Change (3rd Q back)
The percentage change in earnings per share from the comparable quarter a year before.

EPS Percent Change (4th Q back)
The percentage change in earnings per share from the comparable quarter a year before.

EPS Percent Change (Latest Yr)The percentage change in earnings for the latest 4 quarters compared to the preceding 4 quarters. An appropriate criterion to include in many types of screens. Also a common criterion to sort by, with the best earners on top.

So is the answer that it cannot be done with TC2005?

Latest absolute EPS seems much more useful than some of these others, especially since easy scan has the capability to allow ranking.

You are correct. The condition you want is not currently part of TeleChart.

Doug,

If this is not includeded because it is a fundamentals condition rather than a technical condition, why are the other EPS conditions included?

Just trying to understand the fine line.

There are many many fundamental conditions in TeleChart:

Definitions of all built in scanning and sorting criteria

I will contact the Data Department and see if we can get the ABS EPS added.

We added the EPS value. It is ‘EPS Latest Qtr’.

The definition is ‘Fully Diluted earnings per share from Total Operations, as taken from the latest 3-month ending period’.

It will update on Saturday mornings with regular fundamental runs.

Is it possible to add EPS Latest Qtr downloaded data for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters back, instead of only the latest quarter's value? These additions would make my scans much more powerful.

Thanks

You have access to EPS Percent Change Latest Quarter, 2nd Quarter Back, 3rd Quarter Back, and 4th Quarter Back...all as scanning conditions. The actual EPS values for prior quarters are not included in the database. You may want to post this as a suggestion in the Comments/Suggestions forum. (I normally would move suggestions for you that are posted in the wrong forum, but in this case, the original topic for this thread belongs in this forum.)
