Step 1: create a 9-period momentum indicator of a 14-period RSI. Yes, it is momentum on RSI, not price. This is an indicator on an indicator.

Step 2: create a very short 3-period RSI and then a simple 3-period moving average of the 3-period RSI to smooth it slightly.

 

I'd like to add both of those steps together to create and indicator: the Composite Index, I believe it was put together my Manning Stoller.

Hi Bruce,

For this indicator, did you right a formula using a simple RSI or smoothed out RSI? Also, is this RSI formula desinged for one time frame. I tried using this formula for stocks on longer term time frames. Some of the stocks that have been public for only two years show no output for this indicator. For example, FB, LNKD, etc. Is there somethinf in the function that is mising that doesnt allow any output.

The formula is based on Wilder's Smoothed RSIs.

The formula is not designed for a specific time frame, but the formula requires at least 104 bars of data be available to calculate in TC2000 version 12.4 or 146 bars of data to calculate in TC2000 version 7.

So if there are not at least 104 bars of data available in the time frame for which you are using the formula in TC2000 version 12.4 or at least 146 trading days available in TC2000 version 7, the formula will not calculate.

Hi Bruce, 

Can you give me the real code for this formula for stock finder. Chris. If its only possible for normal RSI with no smoothing, that is okay. If its possible with both can get both of them?

You don't need RealCode for this in StockFinder.

Start by adding the 14-Period RSI to the chart. Then add a Momentum of Indicator and select RSI as the parent. Adjust the period of the Momentum of Indicator to 9.

Working with Indicators

Then add a 3-period RSI to the chart. It will have a built in setting where you can set an average period and average type to include a 3-period moving average in the calculations without having to actually add a moving average to the RSI.

Then drag and drop the Momentum of Indicator onto the 3-period RSI and select Plot Comparison so you can choose Add.

Comparison Plots

The resulting plot should be your Composite Index. You can click on it to edit it and change the name or legend (the legend is what is actually displayed as the name of the indicator on the chart).

You can also delete all of the indicators used to create the Composite Index and it should still calculate. If you use the Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicator instead of the Wilder's RSI indicator, you will have the option to adjust change between using a plain RSI and a Wilder's RSI when clicking on the Composite Index to bring up its Edit window.
