Does the volume for the S&P 500 index represent the total trading volume of all the S&P 500 component stocks? If not, what does it represent?

Thanks,
ben

Volume for the S&P 500 represents the total trading volume for the component stocks in the S&P 500 trading on the NYSE (NYSE volume only). The number is expressed in 100's (add two zeroes to the displayed number).
