You can now view a short training video on the ADX indicator by clicking on or copying and pasting this link:

Here is the link to the Investopedia article on ADX. There are others on that site for ADX as well.

Dear Worden,

I am confused about the setting on ADX of DX Period and Avg Period. I see in your demo video, the settings of 14 for the DX Period and 15 for the Avg. Period. In the sort on ADX video, is is slightly changed to an avg. period of 30 days.

What is the average period measuring and how would that change results. I am wondering why you would ever change the avg. period to something other than the default.

Thanks!

The average period literally smooths the line (reduces the volatility) by showing a moving average of the ADX line. If you set the average period to 1 you will see the raw ADX line exactly as it is calcuated. A period higher than that plots the ADX as a moving average of the raw ADX line.

The best way to understand it, visually, is to look at an ADX in one widow with an average period of "1" and then in the other window plot the same ADX with an average period of 30. Notice how the one with the average period of 30 is a smoothed version of the one with an average period of 1?

When you first plot any indicator in TeleChart it will have some numbers in the fields. These are not significant and are definitely not "defaults". You should never consider the numbers shown at first as anything important.

Does this make sense?
