Hi Guys, I have asked this before and got answers but I still don't get it. Worden shows EPS in different ways; gains per 1st, 2nd, 3rd quarters and gains per year. I can plug that into an easy scan and get the best stocks for earnings gains for all the various time segments. It's great.
When it comes to picking bad stocks to short, all I can input is the ones with the worst earnings gains and can't get any info on stocks with losses or stocks with increasing losses. I was told by Support, that Worden does not report losses, that they just put N/A for losses. I beleive that we have previuosly requested a reporting of losses for consideration to adopt. Any suggestions? Thanks, Bill Benson

When I sort by Earnings (Millions) 1-Yr in ascending order, I get a bunch of stocks showing negative earnings numbers. Where are you seeing the N/A?

Negative earnings are reported in TeleChart.

Thanks Doug and Craig, I did not see an N/A except for what support told me, so disregard that.
I followed your suggestion and set up All Stocks and did a sort with Earnings (Millions) 1 year. I got VIA.B at the top with -16275 (whatever that means). Then I checked on the actual earnings for the company and got +.43 for the most recent quarter and +.41 for the previous quarter. The next ticker was VOD with -14249 and it had latest earnings of -1.19 with previous quarter of -.46. The third ticker was T with -6244. It has latest earnings of +.14 with previous quarter of +.38.
So the company at the top of the list, VIA.B is earning money, not losing money, and it had an increase of 2 cents a share from the previous quarter. T had a sharp decrease in earnings but it was still a profit. Only VOD had losses that were increasing. This is still no help. Thanks, Bill

I'll forward this to the data department and see if we can find out what's up. I don't know when our vendor updates these numbers, or how frequently. I'll post back here when I get some information for you, Bill.

Thanks Doug, what I am really trying to do is set up the mirror image of the Worden Easy Scan titled Above Average Earnings Momentum. It has PCF's for EPS for various quarters and an annual EPS. It then has each EPS segment sorted by rank 65-99. This easy scan works great to pick out stocks that are the best earnings gainers. Why can't we set up PCF's with LSP (losses per share) just like we have EPS (earnings per share) and find the worst losers by rank 65-99? Thanks, Bill

Hi Doug, Do you have an answer to my previously posted question regarding a PCF with LSP (losses per share) which is the inverse of EPS (earnings per share)? Thanks, Bill

Fundamentals cannot be used in PCFs. PCFs only have access to technical information like price, volume and some indicators.

Thanks Craig, If you look at the Worden Easy Scan titled Above Average Earnings Momentum, you'll see that there are several PCF's in there titled EPS (earnings per share) percent change latest quarter, EPS percent change latest year, etc. These PCF's are then adjusted by rank from 65-99. What I want to do is make the mirror image of that Easy Scan by making LPS (loss per share)percent change latest quarter and LPS percent change last year, etc. If it is being done now in the Worden Above Average Earnings Momentum easy scan I don't understand why it can't be done in reverse. Can you explain? Thanks, Bill

Bill:

In your post on June 20th concerning the earnings numbers, you mention VIA-B. You are quoting quarterly earnings per share, while TeleChart is presenting annual earnings in millions. -16275 means negative annual earnings to the tune of $16 Billion plus. If you can site an example of annual earnings (positive or negative) that does not match what you see in TeleChart, we can check that with the data department.

You may find the following information helpful concerning how TeleChart handles earnings:

There might be some confusion about the definition of Latest Qtr EPS%. The definition is: The difference between the Quarterly earnings from total operations Current Quarter versus the same quarter 1 year ago.

The definition for Earnings is: Cumulative Total Net Income from the latest 4 reported quarters. Total includes Continuing + Discontinued Operations.

So it would be hard to directly compare these two because of the time frames used to calculate them.

Absolutely right. I was having a senior moment when I looked at the annual earnings on Telechart and then compared them to quarterly results.

The reason you can't write a scan to find the worst losers by using rank of 65-99 is because there is no specific criterion for losses. However, negative earnings are quoted, as stated above. That means if you wanted to scan for stocks with negative earnings, you would look for stocks that rank very low for annual earnings compared to all other stocks. Based on the most recent data, I find that if I put earnings in a scan and select ranks from 1 to about 27, that picks up all of the stocks that have negative annual earnings. It's about 1,580 stocks, plus or minus.

No need to do it by Rank. If you choose VALUE you can limit it to negative numbers.

I guess because Bill was referring to using ranks, I didn't even think of using values...which is clearly the way to go. I was focusing on why you had to use the low ranks rather than the high ones. Sometimes you miss the forest for the trees.....

Here's another question, Why is MMC showing up as a loser with an edit condition of Earnings $millions 1 yr set by value @ min -0.4. When I checked the earnings for the stock it is making good earnings any way you look at it. This is making me nuts.

Because according to the definition of our annual earnings (see above), the latest data we have indicates negative earnings of -$136mm. Earnings are reported differently by different sources. You have to make sure you're comparing apples to apples. I can't speak to the discrepancy because I don't know how earnings are being reported by your other source.

We are showing -136 million in earning so far this year... Looking at several financial sites I am seeing a negative P/E ratio and EPS for the last quarter. Where are you seeing it having good earnings?

To be clear I am looking at ticker MMC (MARSH MCLENNAN CO).

Thnaks for all the help. I have been looking at Clear Station for earnings results on a bunch of other stocks in the losers list and I'm getting terrible correlation between what Telechart is showing for losses and what Clear Station shows. What source should I be using to get accurate correlation on the numbers?

Just review how we're reporting annual earnings (see above), and make sure you know how your other source is reporting the earnings. You may have to translate, if different calculations are being used.

I went to financial sites on Yahoo and Excite and saw nothing positive about the stock's earnings, P/E or EPS changes...
