What are your RSI settings? Are you using Wilder's smoothing?

I'm generally quite serious in my responses (this topic included). It is possible to shorten the formula at the expense of accuracy if desired.

Each of the six RSI formulas in the formula include 142 terms in each of its components. This number is fairly arbitrary but was chosen because it is the point at which the sum of factors the first exceeds .999 when calculating the internal smoothing.

Holly smokes! ! another thought is just adding a linear regression and doing a sort after you build a scan. I find that a good scan will deliver several hundred components. Sorting is a phenominally powerful tool. Allot of people underestimate it.. and it takes seconds. Check the tutorials for sorting and flagging methods.

sometimes computers can be super ineficient at what the human eye can do in a glance. Clearly This RSI approach in a case of that. I would consider a work around if you are trying to build a scan. Or the sort.

linear regressions can be as short as 2 days.. I'v played with as short as 3 and 5 days before, on RSI actually. I started with a a 10 day and still got some tipped down at the end but the linear regression up.. so what I did was to do several flagged sorts eliminating as I went... reducing the size of the linear regression as I went. 10 flag and eliminate, 5 flag and eliminate, 3 flag and eliminate and so forth. Worked fairly well. Might be better to start from the other end. or since you only need 3 days just do that. Just tried it it works great. Give RSI a 3 bar linear regression and do a sort for visual slope.

I am trying for a similar one for 5 day RSI trending up and less than 20. Will the PCF work:
RSI5.1 < 20 AND RSI5.1 >= RSI5.1.1 AND RSI5.1.1 >= RSI5.1.2 - -Thanks Jay

That should work for an RSI with the following settings:

RSI Period: 5
Use Wilders Smoothing: Unchecked
Avg Period: 1
Average Type: Simple or Exponential (Doesn't matter because the Avg Period is 1)

Please notice that if we use the difference equation for an EMA, we can reduce the length of the PCF by about half. For example, the left-side of the first inequality can be replaced by:

100*(C>C1)*(C1-C)/ABS(C-C1)

or better by:

100*(C>C1)*(C1-C)/(ABS(C-C1)+0.000001)

Similarly for the other inequalities.

Proof will be supplied if desired.

Note: I only copied the first inequality into a Custom Percent True Indicator and it nearly killed my computer. It knows I don't write PCFs that long.

(a*XAVGCP.1+(1-a)*P)/(a*XAVGCQ.1+(1-a)*Q) = XAVGCP.0/XAVGCQ.0

For P/Q

But I really haven't had time to do that or even determine if it would actually be the best approach. The fact that P and Q are related (and that P/Q will always equal 100 or 0) might simplify things for example (but I haven't thought about why or how).

So, since you offered, if you have the proof, please post it.

It is not the periods P and Q that are different, it is the "C" upstairs and the "C" downstairs that are different.

You should have written:

XAVGXP/XAVGYP > XAVGXP.1/XAVGYP.1

and then:

(a*XAVGXP.1+(1-a)*X0)/(a*XAVGYP.1+(1-a)*Y0) > XAVGXP.1/XAVGYP.1

and finally (since all is positive):

X0/Y0 > XAVGXP.1/XAVGYP.1

OK?

Well that was straightforward. Did I mention I haven't had much time to work on it?

This would seem to mean the size of the formula can be reduced by far more than half. The following should work (assuming RSI hasn't been either 100 or 0 for all previous values):

C > C1 AND C1 > C2 AND C2 > C3

Or am I still missing something?

That said, I briefly thought about trying to figure out ways to shorten the formula and quickly discarded the possibility after finding that altering the number of terms resulted in a slightly changed list of Trues. Of course I do, but I'll give you an even better out... you are still testing me and I actually was missing something.

While this is the simplest form of the formula I originally presented, that formula is in fact only an approximation of the actual RSI algorithm (in more ways than one). It does not take into account the defined use of 50 for X/Y (actually X?... I'm not going to think about it to much right now... division by zero... uck) in cases where C = C1. If X/Y can be something besides 100 or 0, your answer would intuitively seem to be correct (but see where that got me earlier)... although possibly not worth pursuing.

Your big mistake now is saying you may have made a mistake. You have not.

The ratio X0/Y0 is not formed when Wilder Smoothing is used and the RSI Period is greater than 1.

Bruce's RSI Theorem: Let C be any bounded data sequence with at least one occurrence of C0 > C1 in the present or past and at least one occurrence of C0 < C1 in the present or past. Let RSI be Wilder RSI with Wilder Smoothing and Period greater than 1. Then,

SGN(C0-C1) = SGN(RSI(today)-RSI(yesterday)).

Note: The conditions on the data sequence and the RSI Period are to prevent claiming an increase in RSI when it is already 100 and to prevent claiming a decrease in RSI when it is already 0.

Congradulations! Your theorem is quite elegant. All though easily observed, I doubt it is known. At least, you and I did not know it.
