Well ...

They're all victims ... but they're just the first tier ...

The Japanese look at businesses from the standpoint of Grandparent, Parent, Child ...

Where ... GM would be a Grandparent, Delphi would be a parent, and the myriad of sub-suplliers would be children ...

Right now ... we're just seeing the effect on the Grandparents ... but like every good plumber learns on the first day of work ... shit flows downhill ...

In short ... tape a newspaper to the wall and throw a dart ...

If they're not a major supplier of a growing Great Society program ... or a favored enterprise such as ACORN ... you can probably just short them and take a year long vacation ...

A couple that you DEFINITELY do NOT want to short are ...

The companies that supply paper and green ink to the US Treasury ...

the last time the gov tried to takeover healthcare, during the clinton regime, their proposal was completely rejected, and created a great buying opportunity for drugs stocks. not only that it lead to a republican landslide in the congress, and subsequent stock market boom.

An excerpt from Daniel Gross’s book; “Bull Run(the Democrats and the new politics of personal finance)

 Synopsis

During the historic bull market of the last decade, a series of powerful tremors rocked the financial world: global economic crises; the Internet explosion and day trading craze; the 401k boom. Perhaps the most seismic shift of all was the "democratization" of the stock market, as middle class investors joined the party and the Democratics followed suit, effectively ending a century-old tradition in which Republicans, never Democrats, were the party most solidly aligned with Wall Street. These developments have defined the last decade and will help set the political agenda for the next. We are entering an era when the personal finance is the political.

In Bull Run, journalist Daniel Gross outlines these important changes and explores their implications for our country, our pocketbooks, and our two major parties. His fresh take on Wall Street, his provocative opinions on the new relationship between politics and finance, and a wealth of enlightening stories and examples make this book a must for Wall Streeters, business leaders, and anyone who wants to understand what's happening in the market--and what might happen next.

In essence the seeds were sown for the great Bull market in the opening years of the new decade due to new ideas in Technology, the internet and a new generation of investors. Not because the republicans won the majority in the house. Wow funy you really are funny.

Pfranka, These companies are doing poorly because we are in a recesion and the stock markets are tumbling. Obama had and has nothing to do with that. He is simply doing what he feels needs to be done to repair the fall-out caused by the bomb that was droped on us by the outgoing administration. Did you think that the whole country voting to elect a more sturdy government was also going to kick off a new Bull Market. I am sorry but this mess is going to take a very long time to clean up and more than likely a few presidents will be burdened with the task before we see light again.

lol. no wonder ted kennedy got elected so many times.

i'll agree many factors contribute to whether the stock market rises or falls. nor am i here to defend the current group of republicans.  but the republican revolution of 1994 was obviously a catalyst. lower taxes do matter.

not a bad looking doubletop there either.

To add a little more to the Bull Run story ...

"One of the more salient features of the 1990s bull market has been the creation of enormous new wealth. Here, Gross (Forbes Greatest Business Stories of All Time) pulls back the financial curtains to reveal the "democratization of money" he sees as the result. With the growth of pension funds, labor and education retirement funds, mutual funds, and new investment groups, investment has become more decentralized. Since 1990, the percentage of Americans owning stocks and mutual funds has doubled, from 23 to 46. As a result, argues Gross, Wall Street is no longer the purview of "old-moneyed" Republicans; a lot more people have ownership stakes in stocks and bonds. Much of this new wealth has found its way into the hands of Democrats, benefiting Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and other Democratic politicians. Unfortunately, the excessive cash has also caused problems, resulting in calls for campaign finance reform. Unlike books that offer insight into how people acquire and keep wealth, e.g., Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko's The Millionaire Next Door (Longstreet, 1996), this book explores the consequences of wealth. Appropriate for larger public libraries.--Richard Drezen, Washington Post News Research, Washington, DC Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information."

Due mostly to companies moving away from defined contribution retirement plans ... and toward defined contribution retirement plans ... the numbers of stock and bond holders in the US has about tripled since 1990 ... from about 23% to about 65% ....

In his book Gross argues that not only will this bring the underclass to the top ... but also propel the markets skyward ...

The book was released in 2000 ... just in time for a bear market ...

We spent 4 years clawing our way back up to the previous high on the S&P ... though barely more than half of the old high on the NASDAQ .... only to fall into another severe bear market ....

In short ... the sheep joined the market just in time to be fleeced ...

And Gross has demonstrated all of the insight necessary to earn him a top job in the current administration ...

Pfranka, you have my response as to why those stocks are not doing well right now. I also wanted to comment on a rediculous post that the 90's bull market was a product of a republican majority in the house at the time. The last three posts; I do not see any direction or actual point to any of them, only to say that we had a great looking Bull Market. Yes that was a good looking Bull Market. The last two posts I believe might be attempts at presumed corruption during Clintons fund raising practices??? Also that Gross is a member of the current administrations staff. So does all this mean that Funnymoney was right then and that the real reason for the 90's Bull Market really was because of a republican majorty?

Thanks for clearing all that up guys. For everyone that is waiting for the next big Bull Market make sure to vote Republican next time out I am pretty sure that Republican = Bull Market.

Not that I know of ...

But it's early yet ...

I've been reading ... and and didn't really have much to add to what you fellars have been saying ....

When you take 2 steps back and look at our government ... it's really interesting ... kinda funny ...

It's sort of like watching a shell game in action ... as it is all based on misdirection ...

Politicians demonize oil companies for the few pennies per gallon that they make on gasoline ... when the politicians levy more than 50 cents of tax on it ...

They demonize them for the billions in profits that they make ... when the government (state & federal) ... end up with over half of that money in the form of corporate and individual income taxes ... since it is taxed twice ...

They pit poor against rich ... black against white ... domestic against foreign ...

Because as long as they have us running around ... chasing the faux enemy ... we don't have time to figure out who the real enemy is ...

Exactly, my dad always said that the politicians want the average working people to have to work too hard and too long to pay their mortgage, bills, cars, education, etc so we don't have the time to figure out how bad they are screwing us.     Well that was way before instant news and computers, the problem now is doing something about  the screwing.

You folks are scary people. We must live in a bubble up here in the North East and thank god for that. Hand guns kill people. There is only one purpose for a hand gun and that is to kill another person. I am all for owning a riffle for hunting or home protection, but you guys are talking sawed off shotguns.... Are you right in the mind? When our for fathers said to take up arms I do not think that they had 9mm uzies in mind. Yes Boston and all our bigger cities have a gun problem but making it easier to own handguns is just pure stupid.

Yes why don't we form Militias’ and then we can make our own laws and ignore the government. We can all hide out in the mountains and use our sawed off shotguns to enforce our hillbillies laws. John you have it right with intellects like you guys - Anti government, anti social then this world is sure to end in 2012

Two perfectly intelligent and reasonable people can come to opposite opinions in the political sphere, and that's why name calling and insults are never productive.

There are always different ways of thinking about things ... and each way can make perfect sense ... but histrory shows that only one is "correct" ...

When grains rise in price ... you would expect livestock to rise almost in lockstep ... since that is their feed ... right ?

But livestock falls because livestock farmers revolt against the higher grain prices by taking their stock to market early and causing a glut ...

Liberal politicians believe that raising taxes inceases govt revenues ... makes sense ... right ?  More tax on the same amount of money ?

But ... history shows that the higher end taxpayers revolt by sheltering income, taking it in in differnet ways, moving income outof the US, etc ... and revenues to the govt not only falls ... but spending in the overall economy drops ....

And likewise ... gun control legislation ...

Does everyone just think that it is a "fluke" ... that the areas of the country with the toughest gun control laws ... have the highest incidence of gun violence ?

HELLO !!!  That's because ONLY the criminals have them ... and they don't give a damn about your laws ...

States such as Florida ... who were very proactive in issuing concealed weapons permits ... saw violent crime reduced dramatically ...

There's ONLY one use for a nuclear weapon ... and that is to kill a shitload of people ....

Did we keep the Soviets at bay for half a century by having none ...  or by having enough to insure that they would not win ?

Like it or not ... "mutually assured destruction" works ... no matter how insane it may seem ...

If I were to make my living as a burglar ... or get my jollies as a rapist ... I would want to move to the Northeast ... where they are enlightened ... and I would be safe to pursue my endeavors ...

you obviously do live in a bubble. like they say, bill clinton's only mistake was not allowing ted kennedy to give monica lewinsky a ride home.

massachusetts has the highest government debt per capita in the nation. the "big dig" is government at its finest.

the highest percentage of homicides are committed with a club. should there be laws restricting clubs, too?

adolph hilter was also a big proponent of gun control.

although guns do actually account for the highest percentage of murders
,

FACT: 90% of all violent crime in the U.S. does not involve any gun of any type.

I'm posting from NYC and I can say that it doesn't do you liberals any good to denigrate an entire region of the united states with a condescending attitude...as if those dumb hicks don't even know how to think for themselves.

Look it spooks me that people actually think the way you do.  I can't understand how you don't see things clearly the way I do.  See how that works?  I think I'm right and you're wrong on important issues...just like you do.  But insulting your intelligence is not something I would do.  I doubt you would talk like that to anyone's face if you were having a drink with them.  Why should online be any different?

This is all I'm going to say on the matter.  Back to the regularly scheduled program...

But you see john ...

Not everyone thinks the same way ...

Many folks go home at night ... and they lock themselves into their "cage" ... and give the world to the criminals ... and that is their idea of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness ...

I live in the land of hillbillies ... as Apsll sees it ... but we sleep with our windows open ... and our doors unlocked ... and our dogs running around the yard ...

And if a shadier element of society decides that he wants to infringe upon that ... he can do so ... comfortable in the knowledge ... that he WON'T be bringing the ONLY gun to the party ...

Reality:    What  happens when the night starts lasting 24 hours?

For example our small town.  Two years ago the local politicians decided they needed a new $2 million building so they could have a new place to shine their asses while doing their usual nothing.   Now all of a sudden there is no money in the  town coffers.    Their solution to the problem is if the taxpayers don't pass a new tax levy this May, then we will just cancel the police department.    That doesn't sound like extorsion, does it?   We'll just turn law enforcement over to the already over extended sheriff's office.
So what happens the other night,  a small 5 business strip center burned down.   First commercial building fire around here in years than anyone can remember.    Now the politicians say "well if the police force had been up to full strength that wouldn't have happened".   Or if you look at it another way, hate to think this, did the police start the fire, late Friday nite, building unoccupied.

Just another small example how politicians are all about themselves.   Can you imagine what D.C.  is doing to us.

Apsll, I resent your view of folks that live in the south, as I do.  I have read your posts and thoughts on governmental/socialistic beliefs and disagree with most if not all.  I don't post comments, statistics, data or beliefs because you and I think we are right and no amount of data submitted by the other viewpoint will change our minds.
I do have one little task that I think you will find enlightening, and I encourage you to do this (and no cheating).
Write down all your beliefs on how and why governments should act on the pressing problems of today, and you may choose the issues.  Write down what you think would solve these problems, of course you may choose any solution whether yours or some one else's.  Now write down the reasons why you believe in those actions.  Make only  one copy of this document.

Seal the document in an envelope and put it in a safe deposit box AND DON'T LOOK AT IT FOR 25-30 years.

Look at the principles and beliefs you have written and see if they still apply to you when you are 25-30 years older than your are.

Well John ...

Although I wouldn't be too quick to point a finger at the police ... I wouldn't rule them out either ...

I would call in an outside arson investigator ... the "real" ones .... are REAL GOOD ...

If it was arson ... odds are more likely that a struggling business decided to "cash out" ....

In the end ....you're simply not going to be able to avoid incredible taxation in the US ...

Except by leaving it ...

I'll be meeting with an attorney in Costa Rica in early June ...

Care to tag along ?

That's exactly what I did, I voted with my feet  (but not Costra Rica). Half of my money is with me and the other half will be here soon. Now, if I could only sell me house in the states......

Bknight, It matters very little to me wether you agree with my view of things. I am not looking for approval, nor am I looking to change anyones mind. I already stated that I was for the idea of self protection, but not in the form of a hand gun. I am a Democrat but not a Communist. If you all can play the ignorance card and spew off about your Government and link Democracy to Communism than I have the right to speak my mind. I do see now that this forum is clearly made up of conservatives that mostly reside south of the mason dixie. I have a comfortable life, I do not leave my doors and windows open at night however. I am happy with the current Government and I was very unhappy with the last one.

If yo-all enjoy your lives down there then stop complaining and give this new Government a chance.

QUOTE (johnlc)

Can you imagine what D.C.  is doing to us.

politicians are always quick to take advantage of a crisis.

but as far as the police  starting it, it sounds like paranoia. our system is one of checks and balances. if the police department were ever caught starting a fire, they'd be exchanging those uniforms, pensions, etc. for prison terms. and political opponents of the party in power, would have a field day. in trader talk, not a good risk: reward ratio there.

By the way Funnymoney; we all know that the "Big Dig" is a governmental failure. Continues to suck our tax dollars to this day (but we now have the much needed third tunnel to East Boston). And Governor Patrick is a night mare. Yes we elected him but we sure regret that one. Just because someone is a Democrat does not mean that they are a great leader. Up on Beacon Hill they are a bunch of Pork and they should be led to slaughter.

Maybe I do not complain because my family and I are well off and some I am sure have it bad. We have lost a large chunk of our middle class thanks to prior conservative administrations. Mitt Romney (Republican) was a nightmare for this state and created most of the problems that we still face today.

Now that Diceman is back and the comic strip Villon is gone, I hope that we can all talk less politics and more stocks.
