I was surprised today to see that no major source of News (CNBC... etc) reported on this.
May be I didn't search well enough or my RSS just got stupid.
Anyways it certainly wasn't in any major headliners.

250 laid-off factory workers in Chicago occupy the Republic Doors and Windows factory, where some had worked for more than three decades. They say the bail out money handed over to Bank of America should trickle back to the workers, in the form of severance benefits...if not jobs

If you like to listen to this you can find it here: http://www.here-now.org/shows/2008/12/20081208_5.asp

(public radio blog -in case the moderator wonders)

Everything has a start, and I think that if this makes it to the headliner it can trigger a chain of events under current, and what I expect will be job market conditions.

Also not less interesting in Miami an housing activist (Max Rameau) is taken action in his owns hands by providing homeless people forclosed homes.  Although completely illegal, he is not hidding it, and he is not being stopped.  As I understand this activity has started back in 2007.
He cleans up the homes, changes the locks, and gets electriciy, and water for the new free rent tenant.

Revolution??

If you like to hear to this article you can here:  http://www.here-now.org/shows/2008/12/20081208_1.asp

Yeah ... I heard about the window and door place ....

It's ABSURD !!!

These idiots .... are going to sue BofA ... because they won't extend a loan ... to a factory THAT HAS ALREADY CLOSED ... so that they can pay their employees a severance benefit ...

Isn't making STUPID loans how this whole mess got started ??

The guy in Florida is very simply a criminal ...

His motives may be pure and of good intention ...

But ... we know what road was paved with good intentions ... don't we ??

I know ... he's not stealing the houses ... he's just "appropriating" them ...

Maybe that's what a bank robber ought to tell the judge ...

"Your honor ... I wasn't stealing the money ... I was just appropriating it ... I was going to give it back when I was done with it ... "

These people are morons.  The employees as well as the politians are getting a real education.  When a business has no money and can't make any money, the employees can't get paid.  Your 60 day notice requirement doesn't mean squat if they don't have money.  Good luck.

How can those people be morons while trying to stick it ouf for their families, and for themselves.
A more interesting questions would be - Why isn't the company making money?
Or can we take a fraction of what the CEO's salaries or bonuses to cover the 60 day requirements pay?
There is much more corruption at the higher levels than down at the bottom - I am sure there is no doubt about that - is it?

But the money didn't come from any CEO's salary ... did it ?

In the end ... another STUPID banker ... made another STUPID loan ... for which they will NEVER be repaid ... and for which the taxpayers will ultimately suffer ...

Wow ... what a victory ....

Well they got what they wanted - how about that.  May be the rest will take example for the future.  It is easy to say we have no more money - we are closing down, and we are done now and here.

Do you think that the company planned to go out of business ??

That this was some facet in the "Grand Conspiracy" to screw the workers out of their severance pay ??

My undestanding is that their sales went from over $4 million/month ... to about $2.9 million/month ... in ONE MONTH !

Sure ... if you promise something ... you should try your absolute best to deliver ...

And the simple answer is that they should have never promised it in the first place ...

When the union bent them over the barrel ... they should have just closed the plant and moved the operation to China ... and then they wouldn't have to worry about this kind of crap ...

It seems to me that someone was real greedy.
As for the operation to China, keep doing that and soon the work force of this country will have nothing to do but pick their nose in front of the TV.
Who is going to buy the houses, the cars, and all that chinese crap?
The global economy is on of the great factors that are taking our economy down.
If I was Obama I shut them down.  See how fast they rebalance their wages and benefits.
US workers can't compete with the little chinese guys making a couple of bucks an hour.
A real global economy is only fair under fair terms.
I am always first for my people, the rest can go and screw themselves.

I find it interesting that you don't count these union workers among the "greedy" ....

For the most part ... these are NOT even skilled workers ... they have been taught to do one small job on an assembly line ... for all practical purposes, they are trained chimps ... and yet ... they are making more than many people with four year degrees .... like engineers, accountants, etc ....

And worst of all ... they are making more than their peers ... in much more successful companies like Honda, Toyota, & Nissan ....

And when push came to shove ... and it was "crunch time" ... it was the union that was unwilling to even talk about bringing their wages in line with the more successful portion of the auto industry ... until their contract expired in 2011 ...

I would have told them that we didn't need to talk about a bailout until 2011 then ...

Screw'em !!! ....

I hope they ALL pick their noses in front of the TV until they starve to death ....

And if the "Domestic 3" waits for me to buy one of their products ... they will surely ALL starve to death ...

You blame the lack of competitiveness of US workers too much on labor costs ....

How many hours of labor are in an automobile ??

If that labor were at $20/hour or $0.20/hour ... how much difference would it really make ??

But ... regulatory burdens ... like OSHA & EPA ... some of the highest corporate tax rates in the WORLD ... skyrocketing health insurance costs ... THESE are things that make a BIG difference ....

Obama is a post turtle ... nothing more ...

Compare what one of those CEOs make versus your union worker.  Do you see disparateness?

Do you mean bringing the wages here in the US to balance witht the $2/hr in China.  How are those workers going to live here in the US?
Why don't we bring the CEOs salary down and share the reduction with the workers?
What ? The CEO is going to make 4 million instead of 5 - big deal.  What you can't live on 4 millions? on 3 millions? 2 millions? 1million?
How many hours of labor are in an automovile? Well - how many hours are in a CEO day?

After all there are only so many hours in a working day - what justifies CEO salaries?

How can the union be greedy when comparing to the greedness of CEO's?

How about the fact that per example US is only allowed to sell 5000 vehicles in South Korea, while the Koreans can sell as many as they want here.  What kind of fair trade agreement is that?

Pray the 3 big don't go down or we will see a lot of misery around.

Not to worry guys, the Federal Government will fix everything.

Remember back in 1990, the federal government seized the Mustang Ranch brothel in Nevada for tax evasion and, as required by law, tried to run it.

They failed and it closed.  Now, we are expected to trust the economy of our country and over 700 billion dollars to a pack of nit-wits who couldn't make money running a whore house and selling booze.

Now if that doesn't make you nervous, you may have a broken link in your nervous system.

You're EXACTLY right survivor ...

When you can't even run a cathouse at a profit ...

Then you may as well just give it up

An industry with unlimited supply of product ... and unlimited demand of that product ... and you still can't turn a profit ....

Geezzz ....

Bigblock ...

There are a myriad of issues here ...

I can't support CEO salaries ... as many of them are rediculous ... but two wrongs don't make a right ... and in the end it has little to do with the production labor costs of GM & Ford .... versus Honda & Toyota ...

"Fair trade" has NOTHING to do with limiting production ... if fact ... if you artificially limit a company's production ... that is UNFAIR trade ...

Have you ever seen any video of the Proton car factory in Malaysia ... or the Ford factory in Brazil ?

We can't have that type of super-efficient, highly automated factories here because the UAW won't allow it ... they fear that they will lose too many jobs ...

So ... our auto industry is destined to become ever more inefficient as compared to their competition ... until finally they die ...

Remember when Lee Iacoca said that the American people told him "Give me a better product at a better price and we'll buy it !"

Well ... I'm still waiting ... and that was decades ago ...

The unions have broken the back of every business that they've gained control of ....

The automakers are on the brink of death ....

The airlines have thier own revolving door in and out of bankruptcy court ....

The trucking industry is struggling to consolidate rather than die ... knowing that when foreign firms make their way into the country ... they are done ...

In the end ... there are ONLY two schools of thought ...

Free market capitalism .... and socialism / communism ...

Now ... I agree that socialism / communism is an infactuating concept ...

We all work together for a common cause ... we all get the same things ...  E I E I O ...

There is just one little problem ... It don't work !!!

Continue to oppress the wealthy ... and they will simply move their wealth out of your reach ... and with it the resultant jobs, investment, etc ....

Pary that they survive ?

ROFL ... I pray that they fail ...

Unfortunately ... it seems that they're going take the US taxpayer down with them ...

Our government ?

Our newly elected socialist government ??

You think that they would leave us with a choice ... even if that choice was only to buy a piece of crap ... or nothing at all ?

Nah ... you're not thinking nearly Marxist enough ...

More likely ... they will completely take over the automakers .... build crap like this ... raise taxes ... and just give everybody a car (read as POS) ...

That removes all choice ... while putting even more load on those who pay the taxes ... while instituting another giveaway program for the freeloaders ...

And why not ?

They know what is best for us ... far better than we do .... right ??

There's a pretty good article titled "Auto woes highlight end of U.S. industrial age" on MSN today ....

It details how 3 million manufacturing jobs ... about one in four ... have been lost just since 2000 ...

Some to productivity gains ... some to outsourcing ...

Although I have intently listened to those who say that this country can survive with a service based economy ...

I simply don't believe it ...

I believe that it all has to start with making something ... or digging something out of the dirt ... or growing something in the dirt ... etc ...

And there's no reason to believe that these trends will not continue ... if not accelerate ... as the reasons that companies outsource to overseas ... only promise to get a whole lot worse ...

Someone please explain to me how this talk of lowering mortgage rates at 4.5% is going to do anything but cause inflation.  For those of you that have not heard my interview with Michael Panzner from back in the summer, I will post it again. He said that he thought gold was the place to be, but that he thought it was going lower (AGAIN THIS INTERVIEW WAS DONE BACK IN THE SUMMER). The point is that a lot of the people, such as Schiff, Panzner, and Rogers that have been right---have not tried to call the exact top. They have seen the factors and called the right outcome. That is exactly what I am trying to do here. I am not rushing out to buy all of the gold and oil that I can get my hands on TODAY. But I am prepared to invest around my long term thesis.

Wecome back yourself. I haven't seen you around lately either.

Maybe you can put some life back into this board.

How do you like that car? It looks like something that our gov would build without the Auto makers help. Probably be priced about $200,000

Well remember reality. There not going to pick their
nose for free.
They would have to negotiate their salary and benefits
first.

If not they would have to strike.

I agree with you on the lack of availability in South Korea and Japan, those countries can sell as much as they want here but we don't get the same in return, that's not fair trade and it needs to end. I am not a liberal at all but fair trade is a complete joke and is being exploited at every possible angle. At the same time, the Union is killing the auto industry as well. They need to go Chapter 11, reorganize just the same as any of us if we were broke and couldn't pay and our credit was shot, we'd file and get our lives together. At the same time, GM makes about a million models of cars and Toyota, Honda, NIssan etc.. are more focused and streamlined. They need to get rid of about half the models they manufacture, get the labor costs way below $70 an hour and focus on what people want, good commuter cars, safe, reliable yet stylish family vehicles and rugged, reliable commerical fleets

Very good points ...

And bankuptcy is the ONLY way that the oppressive union contracts can be set aside ... and the US automakers can be forced into a competitive stance ... with competitive labor costs ...

The unions were in Washington ,,, alongside the automaker CEOs ... begging for taxpayer money ...

But they were unwilling to give up even a little ... in order to help obtain it ... they didn't even want to consider it until their current contract expired in 2011 ...

Whoever said that a parasite wouldn't kill it's host ... has NEVER dealt with a labor union ...

Without a pre-packaged bankruptcy ... the unions will continue to suck the blood from the automakers ... until they've gone the way of Eastern Airlines ...

Workers without representation are like puppets of the corporates.
I think it is clear by now.
The new GM standard $14 / h.  You cannot live in this country on $14 / hr, much less support a family.
No pension, no health care, NO DIGNITY.
Look where the manufacturing sector is.
I must assume you are for the walmart culture.  Yeah I didn't capitalize, and may be I should throw a shoe at them.
Lets bring more walmarts and lets keep buying China's (Korea's, Japan's, ... ) CRAP, and I can guarantie you that today's times will look to you like the golden years in not too long.

Well ...

I'm sure that I need not remind you that Walmart WOULD NOT be selling cheap Chinese goods ... UNLESS that is what Americans were buying ... and wanted to buy ...

So ... PUT THE BLAME WHERE IT BELONGS !!

Each and every one of us "votes" ... every time that we take our wallet out of our pocket ...

And Americans have been voting for the less expensive Chinese goods ...

And then they bitch about how they can't make a living in this country ...

It wasn't that long ago that I myself was only making $14/hr with a BS in computer science and my wife not much more than that as a 3rd grade teacher. We lived fine, we weren't rich with luxury but you most certainly can make a living off $14/hr besides most of these workers will get a good amount of overtime at $21/hr and probably make 40K a year on average. In the small town where I grew up a job like that is  a gold mine. Not bad money for only having a high school diploma and you can buy a house for 70 grand. Hell, beginning teachers with a bachelors start at 34K where I live, that's about 3 dollars more an hour than an average factory worker. I want people to make as much money as possible but to complain that you're only going to get 20 bucks an hour when you have no real skill is ridiculous. It's an industry based on demand, if there isn't a high demand this year for the product they have to layoff, but I do agree ceo salaries could come down to a reasonable level and get better based on performance yet we have CEO's getting 14 million dollars for companies that are sinking, unreal.

I am sorry I don't really know how you can live on $34000 a year.  And I assume that is gross - take tax out and what is left?  You can survive.
$14 an hour gross to $2240 a month - take tax out and what is left? Ditto here.

I am sorry but that is basically living in poverty.
Pray you don't get sick, and pray you will hit the lotto because I am not sure how you would save for retirement under those conditions.  hell just for a rainy day.

What are CEOs making?  Really is their job much more difficult than yours?

Workers without representation are like puppets of the corporates.
I think it is clear by now.
The new GM standard $14 / h.  You cannot live in this country on $14 / hr, much less support a family.
No pension, no health care, NO DIGNITY.
Look where the manufacturing sector is.
I must assume you are for the walmart culture.  Yeah I didn't capitalize, and may be I should throw a shoe at them.

Well ... although there is still FICA ... there is very little income tax paid by those making $34K/year ...

And as far as CEO pay goes ...

Why don't I ever hear you bitching about what professional athletes make ?

Or actors ?

CEOs are at least doing something productive !!

When Americans can afford to piss away so much money on entertainment that it makes extravagant salaries for athletes and actors possible ... then they're obviously making too damned much ...

Now aren't they ?

The thing about not having a lot of money is ... it gives you the unique perspective to be able to ascertain the difference between a necessity ... and a luxury ...

And believe it or not ... big screen TVs to watch sports and movies on ... tickets to theaters and sporting events ... etc ... are not necessities ...

And if Americans were doing so bad ... wouldn't we be hearing about athletes taking pay cuts ... and being laid off ?  what about actors and actresses ?

What?  CEOs get pay millions to run companies into bankrupcy.  I am sure I don't need to give you examples.
THEN tax payer bail them out.

I haven't see any tax payer bailing out any athlete.  Sure I agree with you that some are way overpaid.  But the consumer has a choice there.  You don't want to pay for them, then don't buy season tickets.
Nobody is forcing anyone to go to the games.

On the other hand all the tax payer are FORCED to pay for that actions of CEOs who got paid millions to do what a 5 yr old could have done.  RUN THE COMPANIES DOWN TO THE GROUND.

The ONLY people that are FORCING the taxpayers to bail out these mismanaged companies ... is the DEMOCRATS who control the House of Representatives ...

I'm sure that I need NOT remind you ... that ALL money spending measures MUST begin in the House of Representatives ... and even though the House Republicans stood in OPPOSITION against the bailouts ... in the end ... they could not hold out against the overwhelming majority possessed by the Democrats ...

So ... what is the problem here ??

That these companies were run into the ground ... or that the taxpayers were FORCED to bail them out ??

Perhaps you can lay the blame for the demise of the companies on the backs of the CEOs ...

BUT ... the fault for FORCING the taxpayers to bail them out ... lies SQUARELY at the feet of the Democrats ....

And don't hand me that ... "It would have been the end of the world ... " crap ...

We endured the Great Depression ... and that wasn't the end of the world ...

There will be no end of the world.  That doesn't change the fact that CEO's are WAY overpaid, and that the regular worker is under paid, and exploited.
Republicans, Democrats, or whatever - The tax payer shouldn't have to pay the salaries, and mistakes of those CEO's.

After Billions and Billions of bailout money Wallstreet is still giving bonuses.  Does that make sense?
A CEO get paid millions, runs the company down to the ground, taxpayer picks up the tab, and then we give the CEO a few more millions in bonuses.

Well ... it seems that we agree ...

1.  It would not have been the end of the world ...

2.  You should bail out companies for making horrendous business decisons ... depositors should have been protected ... but not shareholders ...

And IF you were going to give them the FIRST DIME ... the enitre management team should have been replaced FIRST !!!!

But JUST FOR THE RECORD ....

Those CEOs may have squandered the shareholder's money away ...

But it is the Democrats who are squandering away mine .... my children's ... my grandchildren's ... my great-grandchildren's ... etc ...

Reality I am not going to get into the political argument of whether Republicans or Democrats.
I am glad we agree on the rest.

There's an article on msn entitled "Retires by 50: What it really takes" ...

It details how even people with 6 figure incomes ... live frugally on ~$30K/year ... in order to attain their goals ...

The point is ... it not only can be done ... it is being done ... even by those who have a choice ...

At this point I suppose anything is possible.  I wouldn't be surprised at all.
It seem lately that the greater the crime the lesser the punishment - mostly in the financial world.
Steal a lolypop at the store - go to prison.  Steal Millions - no problem we will bail you out and sent you home with a new check book so you can repeate the offense.  In the process millions of tax payer will be slaved for the greatness of the greatest crooks, and the crooks will smoke their pipes washing the tax payer suckers make the $$$ for them.
Isn't that great??(sarcastic)

madoff sure must have had some good accountants to cook the books or the SEC , i guess they are the overall watchdogs, was totally incompetent.

it will be an absolute travesty if this guy walks.
