Here's the TSI 25,13 code. What I want to do is create a PCF that shows a crossing up through 0. I looked at the stochastic crossing upward through 20.
That formula was a lot simpler it because it has a function for stochastic (STOC) and that sure shortens things up. How do I do it with a humdinger like this though? Where do I put my ".1's" to compare yesterdays indicator close with todays value and the zero line?

100 * (XAVG(XAVGC25,13) - XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)) / (0.01113441 * ABS(C - C1) + 0.01969708 * ABS(C1 - C2) + 0.02625549 * ABS(C2 - C3) + 0.03115604 * ABS(C3 - C4) + 0.03469103 * ABS(C4 - C5) + 0.03710672 * ABS(C5 - C6) + 0.03861027 * ABS(C6 - C7) + 0.0393756 * ABS(C7 - C8) + 0.03954844 * ABS(C8 - C9) + 0.03925059 * ABS(C9 - C10) + 0.03858361 * ABS(C10 - C11) + 0.03763189 * ABS(C11 - C12) + 0.03646535 * ABS(C12 - C13) + 0.03514165 * ABS(C13 - C14) + 0.03370815 * ABS(C14 - C15) + 0.03220354 * ABS(C15 - C16) + 0.03065919 * ABS(C16 - C17) + 0.02910038 * ABS(C17 - C18) + 0.02754724 * ABS(C18 - C19) + 0.02601567 * ABS(C19 - C20) + 0.02451799 * ABS(C20 - C21) + 0.02306359 * ABS(C21 - C22) + 0.02165941 * ABS(C22 - C23) + 0.02031039 * ABS(C23 - C24) + 0.01901984 * ABS(C24 - C25) + 0.01778974 * ABS(C25 - C26) + 0.01662098 * ABS(C26 - C27) + 0.01551361 * ABS(C27 - C28) + 0.01446696 * ABS(C28 - C29) + 0.01347986 * ABS(C29 - C30) + 0.01255073 * ABS(C30 - C31) + 0.01167768 * ABS(C31 - C32) + 0.01085859 * ABS(C32 - C33) + 0.01009119 * ABS(C33 - C34) + 0.00937312 * ABS(C34 - C35) + 0.00870198 * ABS(C35 - C36) + 0.00807534 * ABS(C36 - C37) + 0.0074908 * ABS(C37 - C38) + 0.00694599 * ABS(C38 - C39) + 0.0064386 * ABS(C39 - C40) + 0.00596639 * ABS(C40 - C41) + 0.00552721 * ABS(C41 - C42) + 0.005119 * ABS(C42 - C43) + 0.00473976 * ABS(C43 - C44) + 0.00438761 * ABS(C44 - C45) + 0.00406078 * ABS(C45 - C46) + 0.00375756 * ABS(C46 - C47) + 0.00347636 * ABS(C47 - C48) + 0.00321567 * ABS(C48 - C49) + 0.00297407 * ABS(C49 - C50) + 0.00275024 * ABS(C50 - C51) + 0.00254291 * ABS(C51 - C52) + 0.00235093 * ABS(C52 - C53) + 0.0021732 * ABS(C53 - C54) + 0.0020087 * ABS(C54 - C55) + 0.00185647 * ABS(C55 - C56) + 0.00171562 * ABS(C56 - C57) + 0.00158533 * ABS(C57 - C58) + 0.00146482 * ABS(C58 - C59) + 0.00135338 * ABS(C59 - C60) + 0.00125033 * ABS(C60 - C61) + 0.00115505 * ABS(C61 - C62) + 0.00106698 * ABS(C62 - C63) + 0.00098557 * ABS(C63 - C64) + 0.00091033 * ABS(C64 - C65) + 0.00084079 * ABS(C65 - C66) + 0.00077653 * ABS(C66 - C67) + 0.00071716 * ABS(C67 - C68) + 0.0006623 * ABS(C68 - C69) + 0.00061162 * ABS(C69 - C70) + 0.0005648 * ABS(C70 - C71) + 0.00052155 * ABS(C71 - C72) + 0.00048159 * ABS(C72 - C73) + 0.00044469 * ABS(C73 - C74) + 0.00041061 * ABS(C74 - C75) + 0.00037913 * ABS(C75 - C76) + 0.00035005 * ABS(C76 - C77) + 0.0003232 * ABS(C77 - C78) + 0.00029841 * ABS(C78 - C79) + 0.00027551 * ABS(C79 - C80) + 0.00025436 * ABS(C80 - C81) + 0.00023484 * ABS(C81 - C82) + 0.00021681 * ABS(C82 - C83) + 0.00020016 * ABS(C83 - C84) + 0.00018479 * ABS(C84 - C85) + 0.0001706 * ABS(C85 - C86) + 0.0001575 * ABS(C86 - C87))

grainmerchant,

The normalizing denominator plays no role in determining an upcrossing of zero by the TSI; only the numerator in relevant. A PCF for an upcrossing of zero is:

XAVG(XAVGC25,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)>0 AND XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.2,13)<0

There are other forms.

Thanks,

Thanks Jim! What about a TSI crossing above of a 5 period SMA instead of the zero line...is that much different ?

CM,

There is a big difference. It is too long for me; so I will defer to Bruce.

A PCF for the numerator of the TSI upcrossing its SMA5 is:

XAVG(XAVGC25,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)>(XAVG(XAVGC25,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.5,13))/5
AND XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.2,13)<(XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.6,13))/5

This will give you fairly accurate results. You are approximately looking for an upcrossing of zero by a filtered version of:

4*C-5*C1+C5

This may help you evaluate your request.

Thanks,
Jim Murphy

Thank you for the formula...
Is there another way with a shorter formular be created for stocks that 5 months ago, when both the TSV 38 & MA 19 have been above the Zero and never went below the Zero line during it's last 5 months? I am not interested in the interim periods Ex. TRA
If a shorter formula is created what will be the consequence in the results?
If you have the time, why do you have to have such a long formula so I can understand the reason why it was written that way so I can copy and just change numbers?

Again, Thanks's for your help on this...

I could certainly be missing something (it happens all the time), but I'm not aware of a shorter way to do this.

QUOTE (Lefty86)

This could be what I'm missing. This seems to be a direct contradiction based on my understanding of the word "interim" and the phrase "above the Zero and never went below the Zero line". It would seem you are interested in the interim period.

QUOTE (Lefty86)

I suppose that would depend on the formula created. I am not sure how it would be created and still return results "when both the TSV 38 & MA 19 have been above the Zero and never went below the Zero line during it's last 5 months".

You probably noticed how much shorter the "TSV38 Simple > 0 for 105-Periods" Personal Criteria Formula is compared to the other formulas. The reason is that the MIN() function can be used on TSV38, but cannot be used on other functions or complex formulas (complex in this case meaning composed of more than one indicator included in the Personal Criteria Formula Language).

This means MIN(AVG(TSV38,19),105) is not valid syntax and must be expanded. Actually expanding this would have resulted in a formula that is too long to be practical, but we don't need to return the actual value since it is being compared to a fixed value (in this case, zero). We can compare each day's value to zero independently:

The current comparison is written as:

AVG(TSV38,19) > 0

And each previous day is written by adding a days ago parameter to TSV. So the value one period ago would be written as:

AVG(TSV38.1,19) > 0

Everything is connected using AND statements because all of the comparisons must be True to for the condition as a whole to be True.

A PCF for the numerator of the TSI upcrossing its SMA5 is:

XAVG(XAVGC25,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)>(XAVG(XAVGC25,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.5,13))/5
AND XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.2,13)<(XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.6,13))/5

This will give you fairly accurate results. You are approximately looking for an upcrossing of zero by a filtered version of:

I love the above formula.  I use it as a custom daily % true indicator along with some other pcfs.  How do I modify the above to give me a weekly TSI approxiamation PCF?   I'd like to get a TSI crossing 5sma %true custom indicator on a Weekly chart.  Ideas??

many thanks!

dnhoward,
If you want a Weekly Custom Percent True Indicator, just use the original formula. It will automatically use the Weekly Bars on a Weekly Chart. If you need a Weekly version of the following for use as a Personal Criteria Formula:

Visually Backtesting Specific Symbols

XAVG(XAVGC25,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)>(XAVG(XAVGC25,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.5,13))/5
AND XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.2,13)<(XAVG(XAVGC25.1,13)-XAVG(XAVGC25.6,13))/5

You might want to try the following:

Cascades of Moving Averages

Thanks Bruce!  I figured it would be big one.  I'll live with the slowness (or buy a faster PC) if it bothers me.  Many thanks for the excellent support and sharing your formula wizardly skills.
