Topic: Wilders ATR Formula
Posted: Wednesday, September 24, 2008 6:12:30 PM
I have recently built an excel spreadsheet that calculates Wilders ATR Smoothed and compared it to some of the formulas I copied into Telechart. My numbers using the excell spreadsheet are quite different than the ones I have been using in Telechart. I did a search in the knowledgebase and found this formula from Sir Tanstaafl. The results of this appear very close to my excel spreadsheet. My problem is that this is just a 10 ATR formula. I would like to use a 14 day but looking at this formula I don't really understand how to edit this for a 14 day period. Does anyone have this formula already written for 14 day or could someone help me to learn how to edit this one for 14 days.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. The 10 Day formula is below:

Thanks for the reply back. I am disapointed buy hopefully this feature will be avaiable someday. I have read some of the other posts and they are having the same problem only being about to buy and sell on the canned options OPEN CLOSE HIGH LOW and MIDDLE OF RANGE. A lot of traders buy on the crossover right away.

I may not have explained myself. What I really would like to be able to do in the Backscanner is set up a condition that would simulate me buying on a 20 Day High. The minute the stock crossed the 20 Day high I buy at that price Instead of limiting me to buying only on the OPEN CLOSE HIGH LOW and MIDDLE OF RANGE. Is there a formula in real code editor or something that would allow me to test this or is the program just not capable of doing this?

Thanks

Topic: Backtesting Wrong Data
Posted: Monday, July 7, 2008 6:06:55 PM
I have been trying out the new backscanner and was running some tests on the QLD ETF. One of my purchase dates was 08/24/2007. When I looked over the data using both Blocks and Backscanner and also my Telechart program I noticed that Telechart had totally different prices than Blocks did.  In other words there significant price diferences between the data in Blocks and Telechart. Is this a bug? Upon further investigating I used a website to look up historical quotes and found out the data in Blocks is correct and the data in my Telechart Program is wrong. Do you have any idea what might be happening and what the problem is. Also Just in the last few days whenever I go to update Telechart everytime I do it says that Telechart Must Organize Your Data Files. Maybe my Telechart is corrupt or something. Any ideas?

Thanks

I have been Trying out the new backscanner and have had one problem when trying to test a breakout strategy. I am trying to buy on a new 10 Day High Breakout. Here are my settings.

1) I drag the Prices over to the Condition Palette
2) I choose Price History & Making New High from the drop down menus. I then choose 10 Days as my High Period
3) I Select True Number Of Times to 1 & Within Number Of Bars To 0
4) I now drag this condition over to the Backscanner and choose the option BUY
5) I now go and edit the Buy condition. I Select Buy Long.
6) I am now confronted with when to buy. My choices are Open, Close, Middle of Range, High, Low.

These conditions limit me to what I really want to do. I would like to buy immediately as the price goes above the 10 Day high. I would normally have a Buy Stop order placed with my broker at .05 above the 10 day high. Is there someway to do this so that I can test this strategy?

Much Appreciated

Sorry about that last comment. My math wasn't too good. I can't even multiply 1.84 X 2   :-)   Your formula and instructions worked perfectly. Thank you so much for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply back. I did as instructed. I originally ran this on the symbol QID and came up with an ATR of 1.84. I wanted to times this by 2. so I took your formula as instructed and when I ran it after adding the parentheses and *2 the ATR came out to be 3.67 which is really not 2X1.84. What happened? Confused!! Here is the formula I used.

I know this is an old post but I am hopeful that someone can still answer my question. I took the formula from Bruce. The 14-Period Average True Range (Wilder's Smoothed) and pasted it into my Personal Criteria Formula's. What I am hopeful to do is to use this ATR with different multiples. I have tried adding the *2 numerous times to the formula in different places without any luck. Could someone please help me in getting this done. I would like to be able to easily change the ATR to any multiple I choose 1.5X  2.0X or even 3.0X.

I am in the process of testing the Blocks new BackScanner feature and would like to use this formula as a STOP LOSS to do some backtesting. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have been trying to figure out how to rank a watchlist using the ROC of the 200 day Expotential Moving Average.

In other words I start with a 200 day expotential MA of the price. I then want to get the ROC of this MA and then somehow rank the stocks in the Watchlist from the Best ROC to the worst ROC

Any help would be appreciated.

Topic: Updating Telechart

I am getting ready to leave on vacation in a few weeks so I got my laptop ready to take with me. While installing the newer version of TeleChart on my laptop I noticed I couldn't find the option to update via the 1-800 number that used to be availiable. Has that option be completely removed? It was a usefull option while traveling in different parts of the country where I didn't have internet access.
