I have a question regarding the TTM Squeeze formula that was posted

If i want to use this formula in a scan, does it mean that if the result is less than 1, the BB is inside of the KC (keltner Channel) and if it is more than 1, the BB is outside of the KC?

Also, I try to plot this pcf as a indicator on the chart, would you please explain it to me what does it mean when the line (the indicator on the chart)  goes up, when it goes down and when it stay in the middle?

let me see if i understand this formula (plotted line) correctly,  if the line is at the bottom, that means the stock price is in a squeeze, and if the line is at the top, it means that BB/volatility is very high.

am i correct?

The Indicator Formula is the ratio of 2 times the 20-Period Standard Deviation to 1.5 times the 20-Period Simple Moving Average of True Range.

A value of less than one would mean Bollinger Bands 20, 2.00 were inside a Simple Keltner Channel 20, 1.50 if the centerlines of the Bollinger Bands and Keltner Channels were the same (which they are not). This would indicate the Bollinger Bands were "squeezed".

I really can't say much beyond that as the trainers can't give setting, interpretation or investment advice.

Is their a way to modify so as to visually represent the negative values (which can be color coded)?

We could theoretically set 1 to 0 by just subtracting 1 from the result:

And use the formula in a Custom PCF Indicator. If you click on the Custom PCF Indicator and select Show values is WatchList it will create a WatchList Column. Then right-click on the WatchList Column Header for the WatchList and select Edit Columns. You can then set the Positive Color, Zero Color and Negative Color for the WatchList Column as desired.

Not only did you give me a MUCH better indicator to use (esp in histogram, color coded) but you gave me a way to scan for the condition in my watchlist AND add a column (color coded) to help  me analyze momentum w/in the squeeze. OUTSTANDING. Thank you, Bruce. Have a great weekend!!

Bruce, Can I use the above DAILY formula (which I use for the indicator/condition in my chart and watchlist) for WEEKLY chart/watchlist or does it need tweaking? (I really want to scan for when the weekly fires first...)

You can use the same formula for Daily and Weekly in TC2000 version 12.3. There is a Time Frame drop-down menu in the Edit PCF window when you create or edit a PCF. In addition, there are Time Frame options available in most of the places where you would use a PCF such as a WatchList Column or EasyScan Condition.

Bruce, I realize now the above formula from Fri March 22 at 11:31 that you gave me is set for 20 periods and I would like 21 for both BB and KC. Can you pls resend?

Also, is it possible to make the KC based on exponential vs. simple? (separate formula as I want to see which i prefer)

Finally, if I wanted to change the ATR multiplier on the KC, can I do that easiliy or must I ask you to reformulate?

BUT...the TTM Squeeze formula you gave me which should do the same thing gave me a lot more stocks (122 vs 50):

I visually looked at both lists and all stocks returned TTM squeeze value of <0; all were in a squeeze.

What gives, any idea?

They are not the same.

The top formula checks for 21-Period Bollinger Bands and 21-Period Exponential Keltner Channels.

The bottom formula checks for 20-Period Bollinger Bands and 20-Period Simple Keltner Channels.

Both formulas compare the width of the channels and assume the centerline is exactly the same even thought that might not necessarily be the case.

Bruce!

So the Squeeze works great--as an indicator and condition for scans. NOW, what I would like to ask from you is the formula to find stocks that have squeezed OUT over the PAST 2, 3, 4 and 5 bars (just like you gave me for the standard deviation).

Below is the formula (which you gave me and works great) to identify this condition for TODAY but I don't check every day so I would like to in essence 'back test'. The formula you gave me to identify when a stock leaves the squeeze represents when BB 21-2 move outside of KC 21-1.5 so please work from this and THANK YOU!

A Condition Formula that checks over 5-bars would be 5 times as long as a Condition Formula that just checks over 1-bar. That is too long and slow to be practical or post in the forums.

What you can do is use the Condition Formula you already have as the Boolean Formula in a Custom PCF % True Indicator. Set the Average Type to Simple and the Period to 5. This will return a value greater than 0% any time that the Boolean Formula was true at least once during the most recent 5-bars.

This allows you to click on the Custom PCF % True Indicator and select Create Scan Condition to check for the result being greater than 0. This Condition should return true for the desired symbols.

Bruce, The above formula I use for the TTM Squeeze and represent pos/neg values w/blue/red colors: red means stock is in the squeeze. If I create a condition for a SQUEEZING OUT scan (first positive value in blue) versus create a scan from the indicator (Crossing Up Value >0)--both based on the same formula--I get different results. Why? How can I fixd this so I am sure I am getting the correct/best result?

It is pretty much the same issue as was brought up in your Thursday, April 11, 2013 2:49:49 PM ET post. The first formula is using periods of 20 for both indicators and a simple moving average for the true range while the second is using periods of 21 for both indicators and an exponential moving average for the true range.

If you want the first formula to use periods of 21 and an exponential moving average for the true range, it would become:

I posted above accidentally wo the comment, apologies, but I wanted to ask how that TTM Squeeze indicator formula compares to the one you just presented.

Bruce, I use BB 21-2 w/SMA and KC 21-1.5 w/EMA, so does your most recent formula posting (4:03 today) match this? (If so, thank you for catching my error. I clearly had the wrong formula based on past discussions.)

Finally, am I correct to be using one formula for the squeeze indicator and one condition formula to identify when they squeeze out?

How would you modify the 21/21/EMA Squeeze formula for KC 13, which I use on hourly chart?

And is there a recommended KC period for 15 and 5 min charts? And what would the formula look like then?

The formulas are basically the same. One of them is boolean and returns true when the formula returning a numeric value is less than 0. Both formulas use 21-Period Bollinger Bands and Keltner Channels with the Keltner Channels being exponential.

There isn't a recommended period for any particular time frame. The trainers can't give setting, interpretation or investment advice.

The following Indicator Formulas assume you still want the periods of the BB and KC to match, the KC are exponential and all of the widths remain unchanged).
