Hi, folks!

In the seven &quot;replies&quot; below, I have posted some very useful 12,26 MACD and 12,26,9 MACD Histo (Exponential) PCF's for public use. The seven postings are for seven increasingly longer bars, which correspond with the plots that you can see by selecting comparable barlength settings in TC (with the exception of the 13days/Bar instance). The bar lengths I've shown use the Fibonacci series as their basis: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 and 21 days/bar. 1 of course is Daily, 5 is TC's &quot;Weekly&quot;, and 21 is TC's &quot;Monthly&quot;.

These PCF's each have less than 0.01% error versus an &quot;infinite series&quot; calculation - this is equivalent to or better than TC's internal plotting algorithm. The daily version is provided for completeness - you can also do it with the following formula (which has been documented elsewhere:
XAvgC12-XAvgC26 - (XAvg(XAvgC12,0)-XAvg(XAvgC26,9))
Even though the Daily formula I'm providing is much longer (in characters) than the formula above, I think you will find that it calculates more quickly.

In each of the seven postings, I have provided the following variants:
Current-bar's 12,26 MACD value
Prior-bar's 12,26 MACD value
Current-bar's 12,26,9 MACD Histo value
Prior-bar's 12,26,9 MACD Histo value

This set of four variants allows you to create a large number of PCF's, for instance:
MACD Zero-Bullish Crossover = CurrentBar MACD &gt; 0 and PriorBar MACD &lt; 0
MACD Slope (1-bar Rate of Change) = CurrentBar MACD - PriorBar MACD
MACD Histo Zero-Bullish Crossover = CurrentBar Histo &gt; 0 and PriorBar Histo &lt; 0
MACD Histo Slope (1-bar Rate of Change) = CurrentBar Histo - PriorBar Histo
... please note that:
MACD Bullish MACD crossing its Signal line = MACD Histo Zero-Bullish Crossover
... and that (for MACD or Histo):
Up/Dn Zero-Cross Combo = Sgn(CurrentBar) - Sgn(PriorBar)
(+2 = bullish, -2 = bearish, 0 = neither, +1/-1 = bull bear touching zero line)

I'm providing these at no charge for general use, since I know that many people like to stick with the 12,26,9 parameters, and also since I think that the multiday bar capabilities of TC &quot;deserve&quot; PCF's that match the plots.

It is possible to find crossovers and slopes of N-day bar MACD's and Histo's via just the native TC plots, in conjunction with the powerful SortBy function, but that just won't do the trick for some of the &quot;fancier&quot; things that people sometimes want to do ... AND it is somewhat time consuming, AND the numeric results cannot be stored. So I hope y'all will find this helpful.

Contact the W staff if you need other variations of parameters or days/bar, if these do not fit your needs. I'm sure that Doug would be able to set up an Excel spreadsheet similar to the one I am using, to crank out whatever you need.

In my initial post, I quoted a formula for the 12,26,9 MACD Histo which had a typo ... the correct formula is:
XAvgC12-XAvgC26 - (XAvg(XAvgC12,9)-XAvg(XAvgC26,9))

I don't know why the quotation marks and greater-than signs, etc got messsed up - they were simple text when I posted them. I hope you can figure them out OK, since I can't edit the post after the fact.

Thanks for sharing the MACD (and BBs, and CCi, etc.) formulas. I needed to screen for weekly MACDH crossovers and you have made that possible.
Would you please explain the formula syntax (in much the same way you explained your Bollinger Band formula) to further my understanding of how it works? I understand MACD but I'm trying to parse your formula and it is beyond me.

Here is a copy of an explanation that I wrote up some time ago. You might find it interesting, but unless you are pretty adept with Excel, the post immediately following might be more useful to you. Here ya go:

The MACD Histogram is the DIFFERENCE between the MACD and it's
delayed "Signal" line. The Signal line is created by applying an EMA
to the MACD, which smooths the MACD line and "lags" it a bit.

"Typical" usage is to look for the crossovers of the MACD vs its
Signal line to identify changes in trend direction ... that is, the
point at which the difference between the MACD and its Signal line
are zero.

Let's start with the formula for the 9-day EMA. For 0.01% accuracy,
similar to TC's XAvg function, the series-formula is:

We can use that formula for any base term we wish ... that is, you
can get a 9EMA of the High's simply by replacing all the "C's" in the
formula with "H's".

Similarly, we can replace the "C's" with FUNCTIONS. For example, if
you wanted the 9-day EMA of the RSI5.3, simply replace each "C" with
the string "RSI5.3." - the final decimal point is important, btw.

In theory, we can also plug in a FORMULA in place of the "C". That
is, you can replace the "C0" with "(H0+L0)/2", and the "C1" with
"(H1+L1)/2", etc, thus getting the EMA of the average of the H & L.

Taking that further, we could substitute in formulae for the 12,26
MACD in place of the C's ... but you need to modify the entire series
for each day-ago condition ... much like we changed H0-L0 to H1-L1 in
the example above. If you use TC's new native XAvgC functions to
calc the MACD for each day in the series, it would work, but would be
very timeconsuming to calculate (42 terms in the 9-day EMA series).

But there is a simpler, better way.

It is possible (in Excel) to combine the terms of the base EMA series
for the fast and slow components of the MACD, and also combine the
signal-line series on top of that, resulting in a simple formula
without a lot of parentheses, just multiplication and add/subtract.

Finally, once that EMA(MACD) signal-line series is created, we need
to SUBTRACT that formula from the original MACD formula to get the
histogram formula. It is straightforward to take the Excel expansion
a step further, and include the MACD Histo calc in the series, that
is, create a single, simple, accurate formula for the MACD - EMA(MACD).

The really neat thing is that the length of the final formula is not
very much bigger than what would be required to model the starting-
point EMA components.

If we built the 12,26,9 expansion the hard way, it would require over
3,000 terms, and a LOT of parentheses! But if we combine the
coefficients as described above, the final 12,26,9 formula has only
124 terms, for 0.01% accuracy (equiv to TC internal calc's).

And it calculates very quickly in TC, since it is just a bunch of
plus/minus and multiplication operations, without a lot of
parenthesis-nesting (which slows things down in formula interpreters
like TC).

So, as a "reward" for having waded thru this, here are the formulae
for the true-EMA-based 12,26,9 MACD Histograms, for today and
yesterday. You can use these to find histo-crossovers of the zero-
line, or histo-slopes, as well as the histo values.

These formulae are accurate to within 0.01%. You can plot the first
one as a Custom Indicator and compare to the native TC MACDHisto
graph to see how well they match.

Here is a very concise summary of how you can use the XAvg functions to model the MACD and its Signal line and the MACD Histo in the current version of TC. It is extracted from the notes of one of my Atlanta TeleChart Club's training sessions, so it's a bit terse, but all the info is there that you will need to "roll your own". Please note that the "special" Histo PCF form only works if none of the three parameters equal any of the others. In the event that you HAVE to model something like 5,10,5 or whatever, you should do it longhand as MACD - Signal (using formula for each of those as provided below):

Here's a bit more detail on the divide by zero situation, extracted from a Report in the !Tanstaafl-Techniks! Club (TCNet):

If you have a param list with two equal values (such as 5,10,10 or 5,10,5), you can use this alternative formula for the Histo which "always" works but takes considerably longer to recalc than the short form above ... Histo = MACD - Signal, so for the 5,10,10:
Histo = XAvgC5-XAvgC10 - ( XAvg(XavgC10,5) - XAvg(XAvgC10,10) )

BTW ... the original demonstration of the validity of the "distributive" and "commutative" properties of nested moving averages was offered to the TC community on the yahoo Aux board some time ago, by Jim Murphy aka BusterMu.

I am trying to use Tanstaafl's excellent weekly MACD pcfs to find stocks with rising MACD histograms BELOW the zero line.

I successfully am using the third and fourth of the weekly MACD pcfs:

Current Weekly 12,26,9 MACD, 0.01% error (Weekly) >
LastWeek's Weekly 12,26,9 MACD Histo, 0.01% error (Weekly)

to find stocks with rising MACD histograms. However, I am having difficulty finding rising stocks BELOW THE ZERO LINE ONLY. I thought the first one of the 4-part pcf series would do that, but I tried it unsuccessfully.

Any help appreciated.

The first of those the four formulas mentioned represents a non-Histogram version of the MACD. If you want the Histogram to be below zero, use one of the same Personal Criteria Formulas that's already working for the comparison to see if the Histogram is rising. You would most likely want to use Current Weekly 12,26,9 MACD, 0.01% error (Weekly).

I was going to write my own weekly MACD

pcfs - I mean how haed can it be, right? Good thing I decided to do a search first and found this thread. No way I would have come up with this! Thanks for doing all the hard work. You guys rock!!
